1800s Boots, Elastic Sides

Queen Victoria was an advocate of elastic-sided boots, invented by Joseph Sparkes Hall in the 1840s. He felt his boots were perfect for the Queen because she: "enjoyed walking and exercise, in the open air".
In the mid 1800s boots became a fashionable as well as a practical choice, with styles such as the barette boot "...[which] requires a coloured stocking underneath."
